EN 490 Individual Presentations

From the syllabus, "Presentations: You will choose a short text, or film for the class to read. You will present on the text, using our class texts as the basis for your analysis, and lead discussion." Your presentation should be 25 minutes long. Your basic job is to prove to your reader that you have a deep grasp of disability theory. Secondly, you need to provide a convincing analysis of a text within the context of disability theory. I want to see an analysis of a text that is constantly contextualized and supported by the essays and/or literary texts we have read.

Keep in mind that a presentation is not a paper. This should allow you to include pictures or music (for analysis) and many more subheadings (for organizational purposes) than a paper.

When you provide examples from films or texts (as you should), don't go overboard. The example should be brief as the important thing, again, is for you to provide an analysis of your text within the context of disability studies. Feel free to have the class open a text and work through difficult passages together. If you would like the class to bring specific readings to class, please let us know ahead of time.  Do not fill up your time with class activities. Your presentation should be very serious, and a very focused examination of theory and texts.

Please dress appropriately and make eye contact constantly.  PowerPoint is required.

Consider the following:

  1. Make connections between texts we have previously read and our current reading.
  2. Revisit ideas and concepts we have previously discussed whenever possible.
  3. Provide handouts which detail key terms and issues
  4. Arrange a meeting with Prof if you have any questions.

After the presentation I require a hard copy of your talk. This document should include all the information you presented (with MLA formatted references).
